    Description

Rare Naval Cutlass Sword with an interesting story to tell. Only 6600 Produced from 1841-1847! The blade has a good amount of surface rust which has eroded the markings over time.  The arsenal marks are worn on the ricasso, but you can make out the "US" on the top "84" on the middle, and then the letter "R" at the bottom (see photos). I am not sure what year it is but it almost looks like the last digit after the 84 may be a 6 which would make it an 1846.  The markings on the obverse ricasso can't be made out, although there is some pitting in that area where the original marking would have been. The military inspector initials "JL" and "RC" are also clearly visible on each side of the quillon. The Federal Eagle Motif is plainly visible on either side of the pommel. No scabbard.  There is also markings on the hand guard.  There is a large number "53" and a number "75" with a dot above it, an finally a small "X"  on the edge to the right of the 53.  The interesting thing about this sword is that it appears to have been nickel plated at one point.  The blade, handle, and guard all have plating on them.  The original brass is showing through on the spots where the sword was held by a right handed person.  Brass is also showing through in other spots of the guard, and pommel.  The blade itself has some plating intact but is rusty in spots and you can see the carbon steel especially where the sword meets the handle.  I would also like to add that the blade tip has been blunted and the edge of the blade was removed at one point as you can see evidence of this.  I don't know the full history of this sword but we can only imagine the places this his been and things it has seen over the years!  Don't miss out on this truly unique US Navy Cutlas M1841!
