    U
    S Civil War Model 1840 Artillery Sword with Scabbard. The ricasso is marked "Made by" over "Ames Mfg Co" over "Chicopee" over "Mass" and on the reverse "US" over "G.G.S." over "1861.". The pommel cap has "WAT" (William Anderson Thornton) and "J.H." (Joseph Hannis). The guard and grip are tight. The grip has 75% of the leather and
    the twisted wire wrap is complete
    . The blade is straight, unsharpened, the tip is sharp, has several small nicks along the blade edge, and has age spots throughout. The scabbard is solid with one dent by the drag and overall it has been painted black. Leather washer is intact. Length of the blade is 32 3/8" (1 1/4" wide and 3/8" thick), the sword is 37 5/8", and in the scabbard it is 39 1/8".
    5000 Ames Artillery Swords dated 1861 were made, 750 were rejected leaving only 4250 for the Civil War.
