Civil War Bayonet Model 1855 Socket, Type II & 1860

Patented Scabbard
-Bayonet is a model 1855 socket type II.
-Bayonet was designed to fit various US
manufactured muskets and the
Springfield model 1855 Trapdoor Rifle in .50-70
caliber.  The bayonet is
installed over the barrel muzzle and fastened into position by
means of
a mortise slot and locking ring.
-Ricasso area is stamped: 59, ., US, F
-Bayonet has considerable silver finish remaining with patina
and some mottling.
Finish is smooth with no chips or cracks.
-Scabbard is a Gaylord patented Model 1859, Type II, leather scabbard with brass tip;
was
manufactured between the years of 1859-1863.
-Scabbard is in fair condition; the bayonet sheath is in excellent condition as is the brass finial tip
with all 4 brass brads in place.
The center seam stitching running down the
body of the scabbard
is
completely intact. The sheath exhibits very minor
leather cracks with its black finish being at
90%.
The scabbard belt
loop is in poor & unusable condition.  Although intact, the leather is
irreparably cracked and brittle.  A bonding agent was used to keep all of the belt loop's
leather together in one piece.
