Description
Civil War M1850 Regulation Staff and Field Officer's Sword Horstmann Philadelphia. Condition is "Used". Shipped with USPS Priority Mail.This original Staff and Field Officer's sword from the American Civil War is in Fine condition. The blade retains most of it's original luster, the etching designs are clear, crisp and sharp; Federal Eagle, "E Pluribus Unum", "U.S.", panoply of arms, flags, liberty caps, ... . The grip is complete with original wrapping and wire, all is tight with not even a hint of looseness in the grip or guard, or any part of the sword for that matter. The blade is a perfect fit with the scabbard; snug but not tight, no rattle, no noise, easy to draw and sheath. Just the slightest wear to the grip, see photos. The scabbard retains virtually all of it's original brown color, though dulling a little due to affects of time. The brass guard and scabbard mounts have a nicely and evenly aging patina with traces of original gilt in protected areas.
This sword was sold by Horstmann and Sons in Philadelphia PA during the American Civil War, as etched on the ricasso, see photos. Horstmann was an importer and retailer of weapons and Military items during the American Civil War, and many Civil War swords are marked and were sold by Horstmann and Sons.
