Civil War U.S.N. Model 1861 Dahlgren Bowie Bayonet Dated 1864 Period Altered
This is an original Civil War U.S.N. Model 1861 Dahlgren Bowie Bayonet Dated 1864 for the Whitney Plymouth Navy Rifle in excellent condition. The bayonet was period altered into a fighting knife by removing the upper bayonet ring and the lower guard and the bayonet channel (Bolt) was filled in with piece of brass.
This scarce Bowie Bayonet has an excellent blade and markings on one side of the ricasso “AMES MFG CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS” and the other side “U.S.N. / D.R. / 1864”. The brass guard is in excellent condition. The Pommel is Catouched “DR” stamped into the brass. The wood grips are in fine condition throughout. There is no scabbard. This is a very rare and scarce Civil War U.S.N. Model 1861 Dahlgren converted Bowie Bayonet which was originally made for the Whitney Plymouth Navy Rifle and period altered into a fighting knife.
