IDED 3rd
. NEW JERSEY 1860 CAVALRY SABER, SHERRIDANS VALLEY CAMPAGIN & APPOMATTOX,1864/65
This saber is from my own collection of identified weapons that I have decided to sell.
This Ames 1860 U.S. cavalry saber (marked N.J.) was used by Private & Sergeant Gideon Biggs when he served in Company G, 3
rd
New Jersey Cavalry in Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1864/65 & in the Appomattox Campaign in 1865. This
sword is 39 1/2” long with a 34” curved blade, brass guard & pommel cap with a leather wrapped & twisted brass wire grip.
The blade is stamped near the guard N.J U.S. D.R 1864 on one side and Ames Mfg. Co, Chicopee Mass. on the other side. It is in good & well used condition with the blade still shiny & the markings clear & easy to read.
The brass guard & pommel cap have a nice bronze patina & the grip has all the leather & wire wrap intact but the leather has the outer black surface wore from use.
The iron scabbard is in good condition without any dents & has some surface rust here & there.
This is a nice example of a Ames enlisted Model 1860 cavalry saber with a great New Jersey history.
This saber along with his 1863 Remington revolver were bought directly from the Biggs family.
It comes with a certificate of authenticity, a family letter & historical research.
