    Description

S194Z, Issued from the Mexican War to the end of the Civil War, carried as a token of rank and usually used as a pointer by the NCO to point out the direction he wanted his men to go in when he gave commands in battle...just in case the firing and shouting rendered his voice useless. As long as they can see where he wants them to go via that sword and distinguish himself in the smoke of gunfire by his red sash, he can lead his men effectively into the firestorm of shot and shell. All bronze hilt, 32" reinforced steel blade, overall length 39". Blade in smooth brown patina. The US markings and dates are worn almost invisible, but a close look shows their traces. This is a rare Civil War sword, as they were issued only 1 to an NCO, who is the only man of a unit of many men and only to battle proven men of courage and steadfastness under fire. Usually buried with them (in battle, or after as a member of a veterans group, like the G.A.R.) All original.
