    Description

This portrait is restored from an 1885 print advertisement for the early Milwaukee Road of the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railway. The text of the 1885 color advertisement reads: Chicago Milwaukee and St. Paul Ry.; The Shortline between Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, Minneapolis." It pre-dates the Milwaukee Road’s costly Pacific extension to Seattle.
The Milwaukee Road operated in the upper Midwest connecting the industrial cities of Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul to the West and onto the Pacific. Acquisitions of railroads in Montana allowed it to complete 2,300 miles of railroad through the Rockies and Cascades for an extension into the Pacific that was completed in 1909 and directly competed with the Northern Pacific. This costly extension caused it to fall into bankruptcy, which it recovered from only in 1945. Although, it was never able to escape its financial woes and tough competition from the Northern Pacific. It later merged with the Soo Line Railroad, but much of its trackage in the West was eventually abandoned. While the Milwaukee Road faced many financial challenges, it operated some of the most beautiful and sleek passenger trains to the West including the Hiawatha and Pioneer Limited. Milwaukee Road jointly operated the Union Pacific's City of Los Angeles, City of Portland, City of Denver, and Challenger trains as well as the UP/Southern Pacific City of San Francisco beginning in 1955. Amtrak still operates a train between Chicago and the Twin Cities under the Hiawatha name and several commuter rail routes out of Chicago are still operated by Metra that were under originally Milwaukee Road's commuter lines.
