    Description

This is a restored print by Leslie Ragan for the New York Central. This portrait portrays a streamlined fleet passing through the Hudson River valleys. This print is based upon a watercolor commissioned by the New York Central of Leslie Ragan. He was a former teacher at Chicago’s Academy of Fine Arts that began to paint for the New York Central in 1930s. Ragan's paintings were featured as posters and advertisement calendars until the 1950s.
The New York Central dates from 1826 when it began as the Mohawk and Hudson Railroad that merged with a series of New York State railroads that created the initial backbone of the historic line. "Commodore" Cornelius Vanderbilt was associated with his ownership of these railroads that led to New York City. In 1873 the Vanderbilt extended the New York Central from Buffalo to Chicago with more acquisitions. A 1914 merger of New York Central & Hudson River and the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern created the New York Central Railroad Company during the first half of the 20th Century. With over 10,000 miles of track, it connected New York to Montreal, Boston, Chicago, and even across the Mississippi River to St. Louis. It was most famously known for its six daily luxurious passenger service of the "Twentieth Century Limited" and "Empire Express" between Chicago and New York. Amtrak still mirrors most of this famous luxury route on its "Lake Shore Limited" at a slightly less luxurious service.
The New York Central merged with its rival Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968. This merger declared bankruptcy in 1970 forcing the government to create the Conrail system which was later broken up. Much of New York Central trackage is now operated by CSX, Norfolk Southern, and Amtrak.
