University-based research shows pet bad breath and gingivitis can generally be improved by using technically advanced oral care products that contain zinc - a metal ion chelated with an amino acid. Zinc inhibits odor formation because of the ion's affinity for sulfur. The zinc complexes with hydrogen sulfide to form an insoluble zinc sulfide. Sulfamino acid potentiates the zinc to break down and kill bacteria that creates mouth odors. It does this by rupturing the bacteria's cell membrane. Zinc also helps heal the gum tissues, revitalizing the lost collagen component in them.
