    U.S. CIVIL WAR MEDICAL STAFF OFFICERS SWORD INSCRIBED ON THE SCABBARD
    THIS IS AN ORIGINAL AND EARLY U.S. MILITARY ISSUED CIVIL WAR MEDICAL STAFF OFFICERS SWORD INSCRIBED ON THE SCABBARD IN FACTORY SCRIPT TO "WM. H. RICE/SURG. 81ST. N.Y. VOLS." IN VERY NICE UNTOUCHED CONDITION. ALL ORIGINAL AND COMPLETE. THE SWORD HAS A FINE BLADE AND ETCHING WITH NICE FROSTING LEFT ON IT. ONE SIDE OF THE BLADE IS MARKED "MEDICAL STAFF" ALONG WITH MILITARY AND MEDICAL MOTIFS WHICH ARE ON BOTH SIDES. THE BRASS CROSS GUARD AND GRIP ARE FINE AND UNTOUCHED. THERE IS A APPLIED SILVER "MS" ON THE SHIELD ON THE CROSS GUARD. THE BRASS SCABBARD IS ALSO FINE AND UNTOUCHED THROUGHOUT WITH A FINE FACTORY INSCRIPTION TO SURGEON RICE ON IT. HE SERVED FROM 10/25/1861 TO 12/20/1864 WHEN HE MUSTERED OUT. HE AND HIS REGIMENT WAS IN MANY BATTLES INCLUDING SEVEN PINES VA, FAIR OAKS VA, DREWRY'S BLUFF VA, COLD HARBOR VA, PETERSBURG VA, CHAFFIN'S FARM VA, FORT HARRISON VA, PLUS MANY MORE. HIS REGIMENT LOST 13 OFFICERS, AND 129 ENLISTED MEN IN THOSE BATTLES. AT COLD HARBOR THE REGIMENT LOST A TOTAL OF 54 MEN AND HAD 160 MEN WOUNDED. THIS IS A FINE UNTOUCHED EXAMPLE OF A U.S. MILITARY ISSUED CIVIL WAR MEDICAL STAFF SWORD WITH A FACTORY INSCRIPTION TO SURGEON WILLIAM H. RICE WITH EXCELLENT CIVIL WAR HISTORY!
